Our Clinic for Gastroenterology focuses on the treatment of liver, stomach, pancreas and intestinal diseases, as well as metabolic disorders, especially diabetes type I and type II and infection illnesses. An overall focus of the EvKB is our new Abdominal Centre at Johannesstift. The state-of-the-art abdominal surgery and gastroenterology departments work hand in hand to ensure the best possible therapy for each ailment.

The clinic has extensive experience in the area of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. A special focus is the endoscopic removal of polyps from the gastrointestinal tract as well as the removal of mucous membrane with malignancies of the upper tissue layers. Major abdominal surgery can often be avoided with these endoscopic treatments. With the combination of an endoscopy and an x-ray examination, the bile and pancreatic ducts can be portrayed and any ailments treated endoscopically.

With ultrasound we examine the abdominal region from the surface of the body. Our focus is on the early diagnosis of malignancies in the gastrointestinal tract. With modern methods of ultrasound scanning (endo-sonography), a wide variety of pathological findings can be detected and further clarified by the taking of samples.

We also perform special functional examinations of the oesophagus (assessment of acid concentration) and special breathing tests for various digestive disorders, which can detect lactose intolerance or an undesirable bacterial colonisation. A breathing test can detect the existence of bacteria, which cause ulcers of the stomach and duodenum and the necessary treatment can be initiated straight away.

Endoscopic procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.  Our Clinic for Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology is noted for patient care, which does not only employ specialist competence but also human warmth throughout the hospital stay.
